Practice software compared / Impromed
Impromed is practice management software from Covetrus that runs on a server in your clinic, with a mobile edition you can run on a laptop and sync back to the server. Covetrus says more than 2,500 practices use it, and it sells a separate Impromed Equine edition for ambulatory large animal practices. Some partner sites still use its older name, Impromed Infinity. It covers inventory, vRxPro prescriptions, over 250 reports, a Treatment Plans whiteboard, telemedicine and DICOM imaging, and its multi-business feature lets several locations share one database.
Most pet owner features come from add-ons and partners. Covetrus Comms, a separate Covetrus product, adds online booking, two-way texting, automated reminders and a pet wellness app. Covetrus Payments handles card payments. For booking from your website, Covetrus lists Vetstoria as compatible, and PetDesk Direct Booking uses real-time Impromed availability. Vet Hero, also in Covetrus’s directory, sends intake and consent forms to clients by text or email.
What to ask Covetrus
- Covetrus doesn’t publish a price. Impromed is licensed software with quarterly or annual support fees after the first three months, so ask for the license cost, the support fee and what it covers.
- Phone support ends at 7 PM Eastern on weekdays, and after-hours emergency support costs extra. If you’re open evenings or weekends, ask what that coverage costs.
- If you want online booking, texting or an app, ask what Covetrus Comms costs, or price a partner like Vetstoria or PetDesk instead.
- Covetrus’s hardware guide describes running Impromed on hosted servers in a data center, but not who runs them. Ask whether Covetrus offers hosting and what it costs.
- We found no details on how Covetrus moves your data into Impromed. Ask what converts from your current system and how long the switch takes.

Impromed doesn't post a subscription price on its website. It is priced as licensed software with quarterly or annual support fees based on the products purchased. source

Impromed features
Installed Windows PIMS on Microsoft SQL with a mobile laptop edition that syncs to the server (the Impromed Equine edition works offline). Features include purchasing and pricing in one view, CarePlans, inventory with CUBEX and cloud-based Intelligent Inventory, vRxPro prescriptions, over 250 reports, forward booking prompts, a Treatment Plans whiteboard, telemedicine, DICOM imaging, boarding, electronic travel sheets and a controlled substance log, accounting links and signature pads. Its multi-business feature lets several locations or businesses share one database with separate inventory, reporting and schedules. Impromed Equine adds stable and trainer invoicing and split billing.

Is there a cloud version?
We found no Covetrus-hosted cloud version of Impromed. Covetrus’s hardware guide does describe a hosted server setup: Impromed’s servers sit in a data center, staff connect by remote desktop over a VPN, and the guide lists off-site data and no in-clinic server upkeep as advantages. It doesn’t say who runs the data center or what it costs. The one Covetrus cloud service named for Impromed is Covetrus Data Backup, which stores data remotely.source
Labs and diagnostics
Covetrus publishes Impromed setup guides for Antech, Zoetis Diagnostics, B&L, Bionote, Ellie Diagnostics, MicroVet, Midwest Veterinary Laboratory, Moichor, National BioVet, Parasight, QSM Diagnostics and Vetek Labs, plus its own AXIS-Q point-of-care interface. Its directory also lists IDEXX VetConnect PLUS, Zoetis Reference Laboratories and Greywind for results, and in-house analyzers from IDEXX (VetLab Station), Zoetis (VetScan), Heska, Hemagen, Drew Scientific, Alfa Wassermann, Nova Biomedical and Vmed. Imaging connects through DICOM, viewed from the medical record, and the directory lists 21 digital radiology partners compatible with Impromed, including IDEXX PACS, SoundEklin, FUJIFILM, Konica Minolta, Fovea, scil, Rayence and MinXray.source
Moving your data
Covetrus mentions its own data conversion services in the Impromed Multi-Business Guide, but we found no Covetrus page for Impromed that describes the conversion process, timeline, cost or which systems it converts from.source
Support and training
Impromed support runs by live chat, phone, request form and remote session during published weekday hours (the same page also says "we're here for you 24/7" next to the chat button, which the listed hours do not bear out). After-hours emergency support is a separate, pager-based service for an extra fee. Training is self-serve: an on-demand video library covering setup, medical records, invoicing, estimates, appointments, inventory, wellness plans and integrations, plus release and year-end videos, how-to guides and the iCAN user community. No live or onsite training offer is described on the Impromed pages.source
Impromed online booking and website integration

Impromed has no booking page of its own. Through Covetrus Comms, Covetrus’s separately sold communication product, clients see open time slots and book online. Covetrus’s directory lists Vetstoria, which offers real-time online booking on the clinic website, as compatible with Impromed, and PetDesk Direct Booking lets clients book 24/7 from the clinic website using real-time Impromed availability. Impromed does not offer two-way texting on its own. With Covetrus Comms, staff send and receive texts, including images, from inside Impromed. PetDesk’s two-way texting writes conversations back to the Impromed patient record. Covetrus describes automated text, email, voice and postcard reminders for Impromed, sent through Covetrus Comms (formerly Rapport), a separate Covetrus product. Covetrus’s Going Paperless guide says Impromed interfaces with VetPressOnline for reminder cards and with Rapport. Card processing comes through Covetrus Payments, a separately sold Covetrus product that integrates with Impromed. Covetrus says charges post straight to the pet owner’s file, cards can be stored on file, and it takes point-of-care, online and mobile payments. Payment surcharging is Pulse-only. CareCredit and Worldpay are also listed as payment partners compatible with Impromed. sourcesource

Impromed has no online client forms of its own that we found. Covetrus’s directory lists Vet Hero Forms as compatible with Impromed; Vet Hero says its forms go to clients by text or email ahead of appointments, and completed new-client, intake and consent forms land in the client’s record. source

Impromed has no pet-owner portal of its own; Covetrus’s GreatPetCare portal is described for Pulse only, and Impromed’s mobile edition is for staff.
