Veterinary Website Features Checklist: 20 Things to Check
Most veterinary websites are missing something, not because the practice doesn’t care, but because no one checked. This checklist covers the features that matter most for a vet clinic site, grouped into what helps pet owners find you, what gets them to book, what builds trust, and the technical basics most people never think to check. Open your own site on your phone and work through it; most items take a minute to verify.
Found and trusted
- Name, address and phone match everywhere. Your footer, your Google Business Profile, Yelp and any directories should all show the exact same version of your practice name, address and phone number.
- Hours are current, including holiday hours, not whatever was true when the site launched.
- The phone number is tappable, not just text, so a visitor on a phone can call with one tap.
- There’s a map or clear directions, either an embedded map or a plain address with a “Get Directions” link.
- Accreditations and certifications are shown, if you have them, such as AAHA accreditation or Fear Free certification.
Booking and contact
- A booking or appointment button is in the header on every page, not just the homepage.
- The booking path leads somewhere real, an online scheduler, a request form or a tap-to-call link, not a dead end. See our guide to veterinary online booking for what a good tool looks like.
- New client forms are available online, so a first-time visitor can fill out paperwork before they arrive instead of in the lobby.
- After-hours and emergency instructions are clear, telling pet owners what to do and who to call when you’re closed.
- There’s more than one way to reach you, a phone number alongside any contact form, for people who’d rather call.
Content
- Each core service has its own page: wellness exams, dental, spay and neuter, surgery, diagnostics, and anything else you offer regularly. A single page with bullet points for every service gives search engines, and nervous pet owners, very little to work with.
- Services are explained in plain words, not a wall of medical terminology.
- Your team has real names and photos, not just “Our Staff” with no faces.
- There’s a way to learn more, a blog, FAQ or resource section answering the questions your front desk hears every week.
Trust
- Reviews are visible somewhere on the site, even just a link to your Google reviews, not only on a third-party page no one visits.
- Photography is real, your building, your rooms, your team and patients whose owners agreed to share them, not stock photos of a vet who isn’t you.
- Pricing or a price range is addressed somewhere, even just how to get a quote. Pet owners want to know roughly what to expect before they call.
Technical basics
- The site loads fast on a phone over cellular data, not just on clinic Wi-Fi. Google’s free PageSpeed Insights tool will score this for you.
- Text is legible without zooming, and tap targets are big enough, especially the phone number and booking button.
- Basic accessibility is in place: images have alt text, text has enough contrast against its background, and the site is navigable by keyboard, not just a mouse or a touchscreen.
How to use this checklist
Go through it on your own site with your phone, not your desktop monitor. If you land on five or fewer checked boxes, start with the booking path and the phone number since those cost you the most clients directly. If you’re closer to fifteen, the remaining gaps are usually trust and technical items worth fixing before your next redesign rather than reasons to start over.
If you’re evaluating a provider to build or fix your site, ask them to walk through this list for your current site before you sign anything. For what to ask beyond features, see our comparison of veterinary website companies.
