Practice software compared / Avimark

Avimark is practice management software from Covetrus that you install on your clinic’s own Windows server. It’s built around a single client and patient screen, with medical records, a whiteboard, digital prescriptions, inventory, estimates, wellness plans and reports, and its Site feature lets several locations share one database.

Avimark prints reminder cards and letters and sends reminder emails itself. Most other pet owner features come from add-ons. Covetrus Comms, a separate Covetrus product, adds online booking, two-way texting, text and postcard reminder campaigns and a pet owner app. Covetrus Payments handles card and online payments. Vetstoria, PetDesk Direct Booking and VitusVet also connect, and Vetstoria puts a booking widget or link on your website that syncs with the Avimark schedule.

What to ask Covetrus

  • Covetrus doesn’t publish a price. Avimark is licensed per location plus software support, so ask for the license, the yearly support fee and what each extra location costs.
  • If you want online booking, texting or an app, ask what Covetrus Comms costs, or price a partner like Vetstoria or PetDesk instead.
  • Ask what your server and workstations need, and whether a hosted option is available. We found none on Covetrus’s pages.
  • Covetrus converts data in two passes before go-live. Ask how long the switch takes for a practice your size.

Labs and diagnostics

Covetrus publishes Avimark setup guides for reference labs Antech, IDEXX VetConnect PLUS, Zoetis Reference Labs, B&L, Bionote, Ellie Diagnostics, MicroVet, Midwest Veterinary Laboratory, Moichor, National Bio Vet Lab, Parasight, QSM Diagnostics, Vetek Labs and Zomedica, and for in-house analyzers from IDEXX (VetLab Station bi-directional, VetTest), Zoetis/Abaxis VetScan, Heska, Hemagen, scil, CDC Hemavet and ForCyte, plus its own AXIS-Q interface. Greywind is listed for diagnostics. Imaging: the Dragonfly imaging program, and IDEXX Web PACS, SoundEklin, Fovea and scil listed as Avimark-compatible digital radiology.source

Moving your data

Covetrus converts data from the old system in two passes: a First Pass trial run (3-5 weeks, including data cleanup, backup transfer, hardware and basic setup), a 3-week data review, then a Final Pass go-live in 1-2 days, converted the day after Covetrus receives the final backup. Converted data includes clients, patients, medical history (with lab results), treatment and inventory lists, staff, appointments, boarding reservations and document attachments. Reminder templates are set up between passes. No conversion price is published.source

Support and training

Avimark support runs by live chat, phone, request form and TeamViewer remote session during published weekday hours (the same page also says "we're here for you 24/7" next to the chat button, which the listed hours do not bear out). Training is mostly self-serve: an on-demand video library covering setup, medical records, invoicing, estimates, appointments, inventory and integrations, plus release videos and how-to guides. Covetrus suggests training staff between the first and final conversion passes. No live or onsite training offer is described on the Avimark pages.source

Avimark has no booking page of its own. Through Covetrus Comms, Covetrus’s separately sold communication product, clients see open time slots and book online. Vetstoria embeds a booking widget or link on the clinic website with two-way real-time sync to the AVImark schedule; PetDesk Direct Booking lets clients book 24/7 from the clinic website using real-time Avimark availability. Two-way texting

Avimark does not text on its own. With Covetrus Comms, staff send and receive texts, including images, from inside Avimark, and a Comms customer says texts are recorded in the medical record. PetDesk two-way texting writes conversations back to the Avimark patient record. Weave and VitusVet (two-way image and text messaging from the clinic landline) are also listed as compatible. sourcesourcesource

Reminders

Built in: Avimark prints reminder cards or letters and sends e-mail reminders to clients whose pets are due or past due, using reminder templates set up during conversion. Text, voice and postcard reminder campaigns come through Covetrus Comms (separate Covetrus product). Card processing comes through Covetrus Payments, a separately sold Covetrus product that posts charges into Avimark, stores cards on file and accepts point-of-care, online and mobile payments (Covetrus partners with Worldpay, Stripe, CareCredit and Mastercard).
