Practice software compared / Cornerstone

Cornerstone is practice management software from IDEXX Laboratories that you install on a server in your clinic. IDEXX calls it server-based and markets ezyVet and IDEXX Neo as its cloud systems. Cornerstone covers medical records, scheduling, inventory, invoicing, reporting and a whiteboard, and IDEXX highlights how closely it works with IDEXX in-house analyzers and reference lab results.

The pet owner side mostly comes from add-ons. Cornerstone creates reminders itself as postcards, mail-merge emails or a file for a reminder service. Two-way texting, a pet owner app and portal, and online appointment requests come from Vello, a separate IDEXX subscription. For real-time booking from your website, Vetstoria books straight into the Cornerstone calendar, and PetDesk Direct Booking connects too. Card payments run through Cornerstone Payments, processed by Fiserv.

What to ask IDEXX

  • IDEXX doesn’t publish Cornerstone pricing. Ask for the license or subscription cost, yearly support, and what your server and workstations need.
  • An older IDEXX hardware guide describes a Cornerstone Cloud option, but current pages don’t. Ask whether a hosted version is still available.
  • If you want texting, an app and online requests, add Vello’s cost to the total, along with any booking partner you’d put on your website.
  • Ask what data IDEXX converts from your current system and how long that takes.

Cornerstone features

Installed Windows PIMS with EMR, scheduling, inventory, invoicing, reporting, whiteboard and compliance alerts. It is tightly integrated with IDEXX diagnostics and imaging. Mobile access works by checking out a laptop copy (Mobile Computing module) or through ISL Online remote access. It supports multi-location single databases, managed cloud backup and Cornerstone Payments. Client communication is a separate Vello subscription.

Is there a cloud version?

An older IDEXX hardware guide (around 2023) describes a hosted "Cornerstone Cloud" option alongside on-premises Cornerstone, and PetDesk lists Cornerstone Cloud as a supported system. IDEXX's current Cornerstone pages describe the server-based version only, so ask IDEXX whether a cloud option is still sold.source

Labs and diagnostics

Deepest integration is with IDEXX: reference lab and in-house analyzer results flow into the record with one ordering workflow, plus VetConnect PLUS. Antech supports online ordering with results downloaded about hourly and automatic price updates. IDEXX's list also names Zoetis, Abaxis, Heska, Vetek Labs, MicroVet Diagnostics and National Bio Vet Lab. Imaging runs through IDEXX Web PACS and Sound.source

Moving your data

IDEXX says a dedicated team converts practice data into Cornerstone from the previous system and claims more conversions than any other veterinary software provider. No cost, timeline or list of source systems is published. This claim is on IDEXX Canada's Cornerstone page; the US product page does not cover switching.source

Support and training

Phone, chat and email support six days a week. Training comes from the Cornerstone Help Hub knowledge base, a self-paced IDEXX Learning Center course and a custom onboarding plan with in-person and remote sessions. Vello support goes through the Cornerstone support line.source

IDEXX's Cornerstone pages describe no built-in client booking. Vello, IDEXX's separate client-engagement subscription, adds online appointment requests: it checks live Cornerstone scheduler availability, staff approve each request, and clinics can link to it from their website. For real-time booking from the clinic website, Vetstoria (listed by IDEXX and by Vetstoria) books straight into the Cornerstone calendar with two-way sync, and PetDesk Direct Booking offers 24/7 booking with Cornerstone availability. Two-way texting

Cornerstone has no texting of its own. Vello adds two-way SMS with a dedicated local number, photos and quick replies, and logs each thread to Cornerstone's communications log. It costs $249 a month flat with unlimited texting and needs Cornerstone 9.2 or later. PetDesk Communications and Otto also offer two-way texting synced to Cornerstone. sourcesourcesource

Reminders

Cornerstone generates reminders itself, as printed postcards, Word mail-merge emails (Outlook must be installed on the PC) or a file for an outside reminder service. Automated SMS and email reminders come from Vello (IDEXX) or partners: Weave, PetDesk, Otto, AllyDVM. Vetstoria sends appointment confirmations and reminders. sourcesourcesourcesource

Online payments

Cornerstone Payments is IDEXX's approved integrated card processing, run by Fiserv (CardConnect/CardPointe, US only) on Clover Flex, Clover Mini or Ingenico devices. Invoice totals go to the terminal and payments post back to Cornerstone. Practices that enroll in Online Payments can email or text a pay link. Card on file needs 9.6 and surcharging needs 9.7. The Global Payments (OpenEdge/XCharge) integration ended December 31, 2024. CareCredit financing is integrated at no cost. sourcesourcesource

Online forms

IDEXX describes no online forms clients fill out from home. Cornerstone captures client e-signatures on estimates and consents in the clinic on a touchscreen (8.4 NEXT or later). Otto writes forms completed online back into Cornerstone. Vello's general feature list includes 'Digital forms with automatic writeback' with an unexplained footnote mark, but the Vello for Cornerstone page does not list forms. sourcesource

Pet owner app or portal

Cornerstone has no client portal of its own. IDEXX's Vello adds a mobile app (App Store and Google Play) and a password-free web portal with appointment instructions, records, vaccine history, appointment requests and Rx refills. It replaces the older Pet Health Network Pro. PetDesk offers its own pet-owner app synced to Cornerstone. sourcesource

IDEXX's Cornerstone directory names about 40 integrations. Client-facing and website ones include Vello (IDEXX), Vetstoria, PetDesk (Communications, Direct Booking, Phones), Weave and AllyDVM, with CareCredit, Trupanion, Petly Plans and Vetsource on the payments and wellness side. Otto is not in IDEXX's directory but publishes its own Cornerstone integration page. IDEXX warns against unsanctioned integrations that rely on screen scraping. source

API: No public developer API for practices. IDEXX says Cornerstone integrates with several partners through an API, configured under Controls > Defaults > API Integrations. Vello connects through IDEXX DataPoint software installed on the Cornerstone server. source
